People can purchase spouses programmed to their individual tastes and desires, anything from an aversion to expensive guilt gifts to perfumed flatulence. Attachments are even available for the more discriminating customers. Anyone can have anyone they want, as long as they don’t want someone who looks like someone else. That’s against the law. It could also make things a little awkward at social events.

For one man, technology is not enough. He is a Telepathic Vacuum Cleaner Salesperson Policeman, and he wants to fall in love with a real woman. Like most men, he is not perfect. He has no name. He had to give up that up when he became a policeman. He is terribly afraid of roller coasters. And he doesn’t have any attachments.

When he finds the woman of his dreams, she is not what he expected. Like most women, she doesn’t feel the same way about him. She has a spouse certified to be her perfect mate. And she is in prison. The policeman had her arrested, because she is one of the most wanted criminals in his world.

Now, the policeman has to choose between everything he is and everything he wants.

“I just want a name,” the lonely officer said to his friend without looking at him. “I just want to meet someone.”

“You’re not going to start that again, are you?”

“I just think I would be able to deal with this all much better if I were in a relationship. You know, if I had someone to love.”

“So go buy one. I’ve told you before, it’s really worth it. It’s even more economical, if you factor in the cost of dating and guilt gifts. I’ve told you about Spouse Now! They’ll actually program your spouse any way you want. If you want to be able to cheat on her without worrying about hurting her feelings, they can do that. If you want her to proposition attractive women for a little triple tricking, they can do that. You won’t even have to go to the bar. They’ll program her to go for you and bring someone back. If you have a fetish, they can...”

“I get the idea. I’m just not interested.”

“I don’t see what’s so great about a real wife,” he twitched and winced, “None of those marriages ever end up happy. Men and women are too different. They want different things. And why would you want to waste time making the same mistake people have already made many times over? Spouse Now! can give you a perfect mate, and she will never ever ask you what your name is.”

“You get a referral fee, don’t you?” The judgmental disappointment in his voice leered down at the married officer.

David J. Rollins is a paralegal by day, husband by night, and sometimes finds time to write. As a young man, he had had different plans, but that’s the way life works out most of the time.

David has been writing since Seventh Grade. He started with the adventures of Super Pimp and his sidekick Squirt. His hero was Philip K. Dick, who strangely enough did not write about things like Pimps and Squirts. Like any fan, David wanted to follow in his hero’s footsteps. Unlike most fans, he wanted to follow them even after finding out that his hero, at one point in his life, was so poor that he resorted to eating dog food. What David lacked in aspirations, he made up for in determination.

From those humble beginnings, David became the man he is today. He is happier than he ever thought he would be and is living a life he never imagined in his wildest dreams. And that’s the way David’s life worked out. He was and is very lucky.

As further proof of his luck, David has lost every one of the stories about Super Pimp and his sidekick Squirt. He has also never had to eat dog food.

EM's Review

I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I picked this book up by just reading the description. But I certainly wasn't expecting a novelette that had me talking about it all weekend to everyone who would listen! David Rollins has created a quirky, sick, but totally enjoyable world in the Sales Crime Policeman

In the futuristic world of manufactured love and fashion, where annoyance is the highest crime, A for-now-unnamed Sales Crime Policeman starts a journey of inner discovery. Well, sort of. Anyway, it's kind of romancy, and kind of comedy, and kind of faux scifi. I really can't pin it down but it's definitely original. anyone who enjoyed Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy will enjoy this quick read.

The story begins in Third Person Omniscient and changes point of view between characters quickly. To some of you this means nothing. That's fine, it won't bother you. Go read the book. I'm not fond of that style, but I got over it in a few short pages as it's really the only way this story can be told. And it is told well. I didn't even notice after while. So if you know what I'm talking about and that style bothers you. Get over it and GET THE BOOK! 

Honestly, It's one of those stories that you want to are with others and joke about forever. Like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or Monty Python. This book is for anyone. There's nondescript nudity but I don't think youngsters would get most of the humor anyway. Well except for the potty jokes and nudity. But there's a whole other level of sophisticated irony that would just woosh over their heads. 

Overall, a very enjoyable and fun read!

From Memory 07: Violent Vani

“Let me guess Marine, you’re probably thinking of that pretty girlfriend of yours.”

Rafian had to smile at the accusation.

“Is it that obvious?” he asked, but Val didn’t return the smile like Rafian assumed he would.

“Well, I know you haven’t been thinking of her while fighting these things, but check your thoughts when you do. The lizards have consumed enough pureblood Vestalian women to where some have been gifted with the ability to read us and put thoughts into our heads. I had it happen to me once when I sat on my gun thinking of Chelle, and some recon spucha bastard gave me visions of her being tortured and killed. I wondered where the hell that level of thought came from, and thought it was the war y’know screwing with me.”

Rafian was intrigued and horrified at the same time.

“So these guys have us outmanned, outgunned, and can put thoughts into our heads now?” he asked Val, but not in a way that Val could answer. “How exactly are we even winning on this moon with those odds?” Rafian mused.

Val gave a mocking laugh, injected a ration bar into his mask, and sat back chewing for a while, as if the question was worth considering.

“Who knows Raf, maybe they’re letting us win for some greater strategy. But remember what I told you, in case you’re ever alone with one of them. You should keep Vani and her memory off of the battlefield where she’s safe.”

Rafian nodded and thanked his friend. Val then went on to make fun of him for having a thing for bad girls, a joke that apparently had made its rounds to Missio-tral from all the friends who knew him.

“Vani’s not a bad girl Val. What has she done to anyone besides being annoying?”

Val looked genuinely surprised.

“What!? Do you not know why they made her a button-pushing navigator instead of the admiral path that she was pursuing?”

 Rafian shook his head, sadly awaiting what he assumed would be disappointing news.

“Well, your woman punched out the Cadet Commander after they had words one night and the woman was carted out to receive multiple zaps to her face to keep her pretty. I’m surprised you didn’t hear about this. Look at you, thinking that you had a gentle wildflower all this time. It got bad man, you must’ve been on a mission or something, but princess had to call mommy and daddy to bail her out, as the Commander was a step away from shooting her out of an airlock for assaulting an officer. Her parents are powerful people so she got away with it, but you need to watch your back with Vani Narcila, that girl has a temper on her!”

Rafian chuckled.

“She didn’t tell me about any of this when I got back with Aurora.”

“See…, you and bad girls man! First with Kim the Terrible, and now with Violent Vani. Hell if you and Vani don’t work out, you can holler at Rueche SYN, the girl who tried to blow up the ship after she failed out of Special Operations.”

“Ha!” Rafian looked at Val and smiled.

“What about Vestalia? Is she a bad girl?” he asked, still thinking of her beautiful face grimacing from the stasis. Val got serious and made to get to his feet as he answered.

“You’re not her type Raf. Trust me, Vani would get her before you would. Either way I’m gonna go take advantage of this chance to sleep buddy. If I were you, I would do the same.”

Tigris Eden

One of Tigris’ fondest memories, was in the sixth grade, when her teacher read her story, “The Case of The Missing Pepperoni”, out loud to the class. It was then she decided she wanted to be a writer when she grew up. But like all childhood dreams, reality has a way of crashing in and disrupting plans. But her imagination and the voices inside her head never stopped talking. Every dream she could remember was jotted down in her dream journals.

Interview

EM: First tell us a little about yourself.

T: Let's see...mother of three boys, book lover, music connoisseur, and debater of movies. And of course I tell fantastical and sometimes dark stories collected from the voices in my head, under the pen name Tigris Eden. But for the most part I'm just chill, it's the people around me that are crazy. :)  

EM: That reminds me of the t-shirt my husbands has. "I do what the voices in my wife's head tell me." How do you find time to write with the kids? I know it's struggle for me with my three!

T: Well, I started my life a lot earlier than was planned. My youngest is 16 and my oldest is 19, soon to be 20 and there’s a 17 year old soon to be 18 in the middle.  I had Darryl (Oldest) when I was 16 and my two younger sons who I adore to pieces came with my better half LL.  When they were younger it was near to impossible to write. I did manage to have a poem published somewhere in there while they were in grade school.  But now, they pretty much leave me alone. My 19 year old actually enjoys reading my books! ( I should probably be worried) LOL.

But in all honestly I still have to check in with them, make sure they’re being responsible and of course have numerous talks about real life situations. It was hard to find balance at first, because when I  said, “I’m going to do the damn thing and write,” it was hard for them and me. So we came up with a schedule. Writing time, and then family time. Now it’s mostly writing time, as I've lost some cool points. They all have jobs and don’t really require my assistance as much anymore.

EM: That actually makes me kind of sad. Mine are younger and I'm thinking of the day when it's all writing time because they don't need me anymore! Boohoo!!! Okay, mommy moment over. How many books do you have out and do you self publish?

T: Aww Don’t be sad! It will happen!

All my books are self-published. I have a total of 11 published. Two of them are not on the shelf yet, and I have three more slated for this year. I really enjoy self-pubbing. It gives me a bit more freedom, and yes its hard work, but I have a great team…

EM: Yes...it does take a village to publish a book doesn't it? Are all your books science fiction erotica?

T: It really does! There is a lot of stuff that goes on, and frankly sometimes I want to take a step back and just say, “Yo, for real! Did that just happen.” LOL But then I remember why I chose that route in the first place and am once again happy.

No, all my books are not Sci-Fi Erotica, this is actually my first attempt at Sci-Fi. It does have a bit of a PNR twist to it though as we’re dealing with vampires.  I have two other series, Romantic Tales: Bedtime Stories Season 2 actually features another attempt at Sci-Fi, but with a female assassin feel to it.  Then there is my more popular, PNR Erotic Romance The Shadow Unit Series which features, all types of Paranormal beings.

EM: I do think Genesis Project would be enjoyed by both scifi and paranormal fans. You have weaved the two together in a very unique way. There is a lot of genetics involved in this story. What kind of research did you have to do for the book?

T: For The Genesis Project, I am not even going to lie, I did minimum research. Not that its necessarily a good thing, but sometimes the nerd in my sneaks her way back into my life, and throws me off on a tangent.  So to eliminate that behavior I looked up key things that I know a little about and then of course I watched the movie Splice. Btw, great movie starting Adrien Brody!

Then I just made stuff up along the way. I’m sure if a true geneticist read my story, they would straight up tell me my ideas, although possibly well thought out are just whacked! LOL  But that’s what great about writing Fiction, it’s my story and if I say Gen was created in a lab via the help of a computer and its mechanical arm, well then, that’s what happened.

I am the first to admit I go against the grain, I don’t follow all the rules. I like to think of my canvas as The Matrix. LOL  “Is that really a word you’re writing? Or are you simply seeing it for what you think it should be.” There it goes, the nerd in me! LOL


EM: Girl...we should hang OUT! We could get our nerd on up in here! You would be surprised at
 the things I don't have to research either just because Discovery channel is like porn to me. Do you know any good nerdy pick up lines?  I've got one:

Do you have 11 protons? 'Cause you're Sodium fine!

T: OMFG! I love it! Okay… Okay… I got one!  Are you sitting on the F5 Key? Cause your ass is refreshing!

My husband and I quote movie lines, literally all day! I could be walking by and all of a sudden he will bust out with something like:  I’m kind of a big deal… Then I reply with… (totally out of order, but still hilarious as hell) I wanna be on you!

We totally need to hook up! And OMG! ANCIENT ALIENS! I could go on and on! Myth Busters! Another fav channel is NATGEO! We watch Dual Survivor re-runs.. So be safe in the knowledge that if the world should end and technology is on the fritz!… (Hoping it doesn't, as I’m still seeking a book buddy for the end of the world) I can start a fire with brillo pad wire, cotton, and Vaseline!

EM: I can start fire with water. Okay, not just water, but a water bottle and a piece of paper...and it can't be cloudy outside. ANYWAY! I think I'm getting this interview away from your book, but I do believe readers will know a little more about you..maybe TMI! So, back to Genesis...uhem. It's evident that more books are to follow. How many installments do you expect to be in the Genesis series?

T: :)

Right now I have it at three books total in the series with the next book, Origins coming out in Jan of 2015. Third book is not titled yet, but maybe it could be called, The Light of Zothar and Gen lol! Joking! :) but in all seriousness just the three for now I'm throwing some titles around for the third book in my head now.

EM: Well, you definitely left this book open and me itching to know what happens next! Do you have any final words to leave readers with?

T: Final words.... Hmm... I'd like to say a big Thank You to Emily for having me on the blog today! I hope all who've read The Genesis Project will stick around for more, and those who are new readers will give her chance.

Review

Tigris Eden creates a new and intriguing world in Genesis project. She's combined science fiction and paranormal seamlessly to bring readers an erotic tale. In this story, we follow Genesis, an adult, who is just learning how to be a Par (vampire) because her "father" has kept her secreted away. Many steamy scenes follow as she falls for the resident hot guy.

I wish there had been more to the plot of this first story as it really just seemed to be the introduction to any action. That being said, I will be looking for the next book as Ms. Eden has left us on a whopper of a cliffhanger.

This story is definitely for adults only and will provide a quick easy read for lovers of scifi or paranomral erotica.

EM's Review and Interview: Soul Stealer by Sam Richardson

About the Book

By crawling into a crack in the wall, Barney and his older sister Eve, unwittingly volunteer to save the Universe. According to Eve, Barney is like every other twelve year old boy, “Irritating by nature.” He’s impulsive, frequently gross and has the uncanny ability to wind her up with just one word. She isn't sure what’s worse; to be told they have to save the universe before it implodes, or the knowledge that Barney will be her constant companion. How many farts can one girl endure before she loses her sense of smell?

Interview with Sam Richardson

EM: Tell us a little about yourself and why you wrote Soul Stealer!

Sam: Well, I'm a British mum currently living in Germany. Over the last few years we've also lived in Amsterdam and Toronto (and of course England!). I have to say, Germany has been the hardest move, the language is not easy and the people are pretty blunt. But they do make a good bratwurst! Soul Stealer popped into existence on a snowy morning in Amsterdam, when looking out my window one day, I saw a little crack in the garden wall and my imagination went crazy! Over the next couple of years I became totally immersed in creating this fun and wild adventure. It was a constant environment I could dip into where-ever I was in the world. 

EM: I just love how the most mundane of things can spark an idea. Tell us some about your main characters. I know you have inspiration for them from somewhere!

Sam: Originally I based the characters on exaggerated versions of what I imagined my own children might become. My two real life little monkeys are in fact called Eve and Barney! But gradually the fictional characters took on a life of their own and became totally separate from the originals - which is why I often forget where they originated! It was still important to me to have the siblings work together and always look out for each other throughout their adventure, despite their differences. 

EM: I was very pleased with how the relationship between Eve and Barney developed in the story. I liked how they protected each other. As a parent, I like to see the books my children read teach them something about the real world, even if it's science fiction or fantasy. What else can Soul Stealer teach readers? (I think only parents will be reading this, so you're safe!)

Sam: I would hope the book teaches that it's okay to be scared sometimes, crying is not a sign of weakness it's often just part of the healing process. Eve and Barney have to cope with some scary situations, each of which gradually make them stronger as individuals and as a team. I also think the ability to laugh at yourself and not take silly things too seriously is very important.  Hopefully I have shown this throughout the book. At the end of the day I wanted to create a good old fashioned adventure! 

EM:I think you did exactly what you set out to do! Now, the big question that will be on young readers' minds soon enough...Will Barney and Eve be headed on any more adventures in the near future?

Sam: I think they're getting itchy feel already! Although adventures of this magnitude take preparation, and I wouldn't want Eve and Barney to be unprepared! definitely in the pipeline though! I also welcome any thoughts as to where readers might want to see Eve and Barney go next. 

EM: I think readers will be excited to hear this!  Is there anything else you would have parents of middle grade readers, or the readers themselves know? 

Sam: I'd love to leave you with something thought provoking, but nope! Read and enjoy!

My Review

Soul Stealer is an AWESOME book!  I don't normally read middle grade books...because...you know...I'm not a middle grader. But even adults will enjoy this action packed story. Many times Ms. Richardson will leave you on the edge of your seat. But even more than that, the author's imagination captured me. She has created a world...nay, worlds that are so fantastic and eloquently described you will be thinking about them long after the book is over.

My only complaint is that there isn't another adventure for Barney and Eve to go on yet! I think the length is perfect for MG though. I would caution parents of very sensitive children that there are some themes of death and loss in Soul Stealer as well as some pretty intense scenes with Zombie like creatures. I think it would be fine for most though. There is lots of potty humor and I think a "bloody hell" or two. You'll be happy to know it's innuendo free though!

Overall, I can't praise this book enough. You'll enjoy it!  Your kids will certainly enjoy it! It's just a fun, exciting, adventure.

My head is slammed hard against the ground and my vision wavers as pain radiates down my neck and through my spine.

The smoke slowly begins clearing around me as my head lolls to the side, dark spots assault my eyes. I see the bottom of the Christmas tree and my eyes shift. Suddenly Dana is lying under it, facing me. She is trying to tell me something, but it’s like her voice has been put on mute.

“Dana…” I mutter her name and a sharp intake of breath enters my lungs, the black spots recede momentarily. I vaguely notice there is commotion going on around me and the man who hit me is no longer holding me trapped. I know I should move, try and escape while I can, but my eyes are glued to Dana. She is still saying something to me, but I’ve given up trying to work out what it is. Instead, I stare at her and try to take in every inch of her. 

She must be fifteen now and looks so beautiful. She’s wearing a blue nightie she used to love and her bright red hair is up in a loose ponytail. She lifts her head up, resting on her propped up hand, and again her mouth shifts urgently. I watch her lips moving and gradually I realize she’s repeating something over and over again. I squint my eyes and just make out what she is saying as strong hands grab my arms and I’m hauled up onto my feet, the image of Dana disappearing. I’m dragged away from the kitchen with Dana’s words now echoing through my mind.

She’d been saying to me, “Don’t fall asleep.”

My Review

Taken by Force picks up eight months from where Taken by Surprise leaves off. While I think someone could read book two without reading book one and not have a problem, I wouldn't recommend it. Book one really builds up the relationships and Book two just wouldn't be the same without that.

There was a lot to like about this book. There is lots of action and suspense. It's all written very well just like book one. I was really glad to see Zoe begin to take responsibility for herself and rely on her own strength toward the end of this story. I liked that the team got a little down time and a moment to relax before it all hit the fan. I liked reading about all the characters' childhoods and Christmas experiences. It made it a great holiday read.

There was some I didn't like. There was no success for the characters in this book. Even when they "won" there was an undertone of depression. I get that. War is not pretty. But I would have liked to see a little victory so that I could cheer for my team! And it would have made the losses that more potent. I also wish there was more timey wimey stuff in this one like the last book. While there appeared to be NONE, I have a feeling I might be eating my words in the next book.At least I hope so!

The build up to the action was really slow, but I'm totally cool with that. It allowed me to really relate to the characters. Readers just need to know that and not give up. There is payoff!  This story has some mild language and lots of steamy scenes so I would recommend it for 17+.

All in all, it is an excellent continuation of the Taken series and I'm chomping at the bit to get the next installment!

Interview with Author Bonnie Milani

EM: We welcome Bonnie Milani, author of Home World to the blog today. I met Bonnie when I joined an online critique book. I'm not exaggerating when I say this woman taught me how to write. Maybe not single-handedly, but pretty a major factor. Needless to say, she is an amazing person and even more amazing writer. You're not going to want to miss this book. SoBonnie, you have created a phenomenally detailed world in your book Home World. Where did you draw inspiration from?

Bonnie: Pretty much everywhere: in the case of Home World, the entire story started with a dream. Then as I tried to work through where my heroine - a Samurai-trained young woman who was pretty definitely not Japanese - could possibly come from I realized the story could only happen in Hawaii. Voila! All of a sudden all sorts of elements started to fall into place. I'm lucky enough to live in CA, so I've been doing the island hop at least once every couple of years for ...welllllll....a lot of years. I've been there often enough to have gone exploring outside the tourist areas, to sit & listen to teens chat, catch the flavor of the local dialect. Over the years I also picked up a good many of the local stories about Tutu Pele, Hawaii's volcano goddess. Every last bit of it helped inspire Home World's story.

EM: I didn't know this all started as a dream! That's pretty neat. And so is being able to spend time in Hawaii! So you mentioned your heroine. I have to say, through the first part of Home World, I wasn't sure who the good guys were and who the bad guys were. Each character is drawn so completely that you have sympathy for each one. Seriously....Letticia is my favorite villain of all time. I want a t-shirt that says "Team Letticia". Did you mean to make your good guys do bad things and for your readers to have such sympathy for the villains or did that just naturally happen as you wrote the characters?

Bonnie: Oh, my dear, you DO warm my heart! Actually, the blurred lines between good & evil, and the sympathy for Letticia really was intentional. I wanted to explore the inner worlds of each character, so that readers could see why each of these people did: that they were working to protect themselves & their worlds. I wound up surprising myself by developing a real respect for JP & discovering that Octavian is actually quite an honorable fellow, & embarrassed as hell about it. With Lush - I wanted readers to be rooting for Lush to redeem herself. Hell, I kept hoping Lush'd redeem herself. Only she just wasn't going in that direction. Which was a GOOD thing for the story! Funny thing was that the only character who really gave me shudders was Grandfather Ho. He's even scarier than the Ta'an assassin. Incidentally, it was the Ta'an in this story who got me thinking about another character I'm hoping will fit into the sequel (God should grant me life enough to write it!). That one's Koh, a Ta'an who gets his first-ever introduction to kindness and compassion from Keiko and discovers there just may be other things to do with new & interesting people besides killing them. Don't know where or whether or if he fits, but now he's awake he's doing the damned cat-around-the-legs routine.

EM:

SEQUEL!!!!! Oh yes! So you've told me before that it took a long time for you to write Home World. Now that you have one book under your belt, do you think it will be easier/quicker to write and publish another? Bonnie: Yes, feels to me like the old adage 'first time is always the hardest' holds true for story-telling, too. I learned far more about structure & character & conflict by writing (& re-writing &re-writing & re-writing....) Home World than I ever did by either taking classes or teaching them, for that matter. And as any teacher will tell you, you learn more about your subject as a teacher than you do as a student. That is SO true! Now...thanks to Home World I don't just have the outline for the sequel in my mind, I'm now able to see how the plot needs to unfold, to see what has to happen where in the through line for the story to make sense & develop the emotional wallop it needs. (If you think HW has a bittersweet ending just wait till you see the next one!) Time-wise: I hope to GOD it doesn't take me longer to write than Home World! Right now, though, I'm working on a few of the short stories that've been kicking around the back of my mind for a number of years. Emotionally, I need to work on some SHORT stuff for a while to build up the energy to tackle the next installment of the Home World series.Mind, I haven't left the Commonwealth even in the shorts. I'm just doing a bit of a tour of its outlying regions. The other thing that's been a pleasant surprise is how effective working with a micro-publisher has been. I've done the agent routine in the past, and even got an early version of Home World picked up by one of the legacy publishing houses for a proposed new line of sci fi novels. Only that deal fell through leaving me high & dry. I knew then I did NOT want to spend a year or two trying to get some 'name' publisher's attention. I was thrilled when a dear friend &mentor introduced me to Promontory Press. Here's hoping this works out as well as I expect! EM: I hope it all works out for you too, Bonnie. You and Home World really deserve it. So you talk about the bitter-sweet ending. There are many of those moments in the book. What scene in the book was the most difficult to write for you emotionally? Bonnie: Hands down, no questions asked, the most difficult scene emotionally was the scene where Teufelsman & his henchmen subject Keiko to Venus Seed. That was just ...So. Damned. Hard. It came too close to home, dredged up some memories I'd managed to submerge. But that's part of the reason writing is both so painful and so healing. If you as a writer try to protect yourself from what your character is suffering, if you try to keep the terror or agony or shame at arm's length,then you cannot tell the truth of your story. As a writer you just have to wade through it with them, even if that means you can't see the screen for the tears. What makes it worthwhile is that by enduring the pain with your character, you have to force yourself to take control of the memories you must call on in order to create the scene. You have to force yourself to re-live them - but this time by molding them into another shape. By taking control of them. Once you've managed to do that you drain those memories of the power to hurt you again. You don't just shove them back into the genie's bottle; you bend that amorphous, pervasive threat into a concrete, controllable blot & expunge it by embedding it in the page. So terribly painful? Emotionally draining? Yes, on both counts. But worth it many time overs. EM: And I think this is why Home World is such an amazing story and you are such an amazing author. You have literally POURED yourself into it. I think this is something aspiring writers need to know. You're stories won't pack a punch unless you take the same punches your characters do. Are there any other words of wisdom you would have for someone thinking of writing a novel? Bonnie: Wisdom she wants... I don't know about wisdom, but I can sure talk to getting the book written.  There are two consistent complaints I hear from aspiring authors: 1.Lack of writing time 2.Lack of helpful feedback Taking these in order:  when it comes to writing time, you will never find time to write.  Trust me on this.  Scrubbing down the kitchen never feels quite so appealing as when you're staring at a blank page that does nothing more than stare back.  Then there's that cousin you've been meaning to call for the past month - suddenly that call just feels urgent.  And, of course, there's always the family, who're more than happy to soak up every second they can possibly get.  Something, some how, will always get in the way of your story unless you recognize your writing time as your own, uniquely personal form of worship. I read once that while the entire human species loves a good story, only about 1% of us actually have the gift of story-telling.  Don't let those millions of indie books on Amazon or Goodreads or Wattpad fool you:  take one look through the majority of them and you'll realize that simply slapping words onto a page does NOT, a story make.  I'm not trying to be snooty or elitist.  It's just that those of us with the gift LIVE with a whole universe of unexpected people popping in and out of the back of our minds.  To make those characters come alive on the page for readers who've never met them (or had to listen to them spout off in the middle of Uncle Arnold's 450th recounting of winning that blue ribbon) we have to learn the craft of writing.  We have to learn structure, learn HOW to make the excitement we feel work on the page, HOW to weave an action-reaction pattern into a through line and then fit the protagonist's character arc into the whole.  And that's just flat out HARD.  And the only way to learn it is to park your butt in the chair and MAKE time to DO it.  Suggestion?  Pick one set time of day and one specific work spot.  Then declare that spot and that hour your sacred time.  During that time you don't answer the phone, or spouses, or kids (okay, so for little ones the rules get bent) or do anything else.  That is the time you give to yourself to use the gift God gave you.  It works.   Lack of feedback is a real challenge.  It amazes me just how difficult it is for any aspiring writer to find a reliable critiquing group.  Even in our internationally interconnected internet age it's still terribly hard to find a real writer's group whose member provide useful, honest, yet supportive feedback.  Family's nice - but let's face it, 'Wow, cool!' doesn't help a whole lot.  Yet hard as it is to find a compatible group it's worth the search.  No one can grow as a writer without fresh, unbiased eyes to say whether a scene creates the emotional impact we think we wrote into it - or even works, for that matter.  The GOOD news is that there are some great blogs (shall we mention names?) that can provide helpful links and recommendations.  I cannot urge your readers strongly enough to invest the time and effort to find a group that fits their individual needs. Of course, there's another side to feedback.  And that's learning how to take it.  Maybe the hardest thing for any newbie to learn is to separate him or herself from the words on the page.  The 'giving birth' analogy is quite apt.  Stories are like our children in so many ways.  While they're in us, they need to be nurtured and shaped and disciplined.  But once those stories hit the page they turn into teenagers and have to be able to stand on their own.  A good critique points out what's right AND what's wrong with a story.  To become a good writer you have to learn to step back from the emotion you've invested in the story and see the words on the page for themselves.  Otherwise, you'll never be able to fix the flaws in your story.  You'll just spend a lot of hours nursing a broken heart.

My Review

I reserve my 5 star rating for books that have that have a lasting effect. Home World has that power. I had the honor to read an advanced, advanced review copy and it is simply amazing. It's everything good scifi should be: well built future world with lots of tech and history, new and interesting "types" of people, and a vision of future earth that is believable. Milani also throws in a love.triangle...or square, but not in a cheezy way. Her characters are so vivid, you will be cheering or screaming at them. If there were a t-shirt....I'd be on team Letticia! She has to be my favorite villain of all time!

It has mild language, but there are some sexual themes that will probably preclude younger audiences from reading, but older teens and up will enjoy this masterful work of Science Fiction.

EM's Review

I picked this book to review because I love romance, and I love futuristic! But let's make no bones about it, this is erotica. Just because it's erotica doesn't mean it's badly written. On the contrary, the characters were well developed, the plot was exciting and made sense, and the writing was good. 

I particularly enjoyed the author's portrayal of dominant and submissive sex and the way she juxtaposed it with the misconceptions of the practice by creating a world based on those fallacies. She did a great job of showing that dominate/submissive sex is not about a weak person and a strong person, but rather two strong people learning to trust and care on a deeper level.

I also loved the worlds Ms. Knight created. They are full of. fantastic gadgets and cultures that are believable and at times cruel. The plot was fast paced and action packed, but a little predictable. One thing caught me off guard though, and I laughed out loud for a good minute at the end of the book. I won't spoil it, but it was perfect.

While the writing was good, there were many distracting places that could have used some looking over; lots of repetitive words and some awkward phrasing. Overall not enough to garner a negative review though. This book is for adults only because of detailed and graphic sex scenes. There is also violence and blood as well as some themes of rape. While these parts of the story are not too detailed, it is a caution for specific readers.

Overall an entertaining and easy read.

Bounty Hunter is the age-old tale of a teenager’s rites of passage…scratch that.  There was nothing age-old about it!  Kai, a teenage witch on the run finds himself in the most dangerous and dire of situations.  Only through the new-found friendships and a revealing open honesty with an old one, is he able to overcome the many obstacles this world throws at him. This book is very well paced with lots of action and nail-biting over the characters many perils.  Though the world and its situations are very dark, the author has well timed comedic moments spawned from the nicely developed characters.  Their interactions often reminded me of the crew of Serenity.  I thoroughly enjoyed reading Bounty Hunter and look forward to more from Kai and the crew of The Derkomai.

EM's Review

Sanctuary is not your ordinary end of the world novel. Ms. Creeden realistically combines Biblical end times prophecy, with other popular apocalyptic themes including zombies AND aliens.  You might think all that is a little too much, but it does work! I loved the Biblical quotes from Revelations at the beginning of many of the chapters. It's an imaginative take on old tired theories. 

This book is an action packed emotional ride. Ms. Creeden doesn't hold any punches when it comes to danger, loss, faith, and gore. (The gore isn't over the top though.) The book jumps right in on the plot with little lead up and you barely stop to catch a breath. This really adds to the immediacy of what the main characters are facing and I found my self holding my breath and tapping my foot in the most intense scenes. You do get to know the characters along the way though, and they are well drawn out.

While I thoroughly enjoyed this read, I need to mention a couple of things. While the writing, plot, characterization were all good, there were places I felt I was being told how to feel a about a character instead of being able to make up my own mind. The characters are well written so this was unnecessary and distracting. I also found the decay of society unrealistic, like the utilities continuing to work even after two thirds of the population had disappeared. I was also unsatisfied with the ending. It's obvious this book is meant to be the first in a series. I didn't feel that there was significant resolution or forward motion in the plot to consider it a well rounded novel.

I consider the first two points minor distractions. The last, though frustrating, would not deter me from standing in line to get the next book. The creativity and ease of reading more than make up for it!

While the main characters are all in their early to late 20's, and there is a love triangle, the interactions are tame. A younger child that is sensitive to themes of loss and death may need some parental guidance, but it's far less intense than the Hunger Games.

This is an overall great, clean, YA read. You might even say it's inspirational.
