Book Review: 6 Hours, 6 Minutes, 6 Seconds

Description

Allen Weathers used to like his job as a pathologist.  The dead were poor company making the morgue a lonely place at times.  The world expected little of him and he preferred it that way.  All that changed when the dead inexplicably began to rise.
Now, two years from the initial rising, little is known of why or how this is happening.  The only two sure facts are that to put the undead to rest the brain must be completely destroyed and that the deceased rise exactly 6 hours, 6 minutes, and 6 seconds after dying.
Knowing the time limit has allowed the world to regain some semblance of control, but it has redefined Allen’s job description.  He’s been thrust reluctantly into the spotlight.  He is a disposer of the dead.  Every day is a gruesome game of beat the clock.  Gone are the days when nobody was counting on him, because if he fails at his job, if he can’t stay ahead of the game, the dead will rise up and overrun the city.

Excerpt

“We should try to make a run for it too,” Alice said. “My car is pretty close to gate, we could…,” she cut off seeing Josh shaking his head.

“They followed me down the stairs to the basement. I had to barricade the door to get away. I was trying to find you guys so we could try to make a run for it through the ER.”

“The ER is overrun too,” Allen replied numbly.

“So what do we do?” Josh asked.

They all looked at Allen. The weight of their stares threatened to crumble him. He wished it were just him. He knew what he’d do if he were the only one left, but being responsible for three young people made it a hard decision. Still, he knew there weren’t many other options. They could arm themselves and try to fight their way out of the hospital, into the parking lot and take their chances in a city that is surly overrun by now. They could barricade themselves in the Morgue and hope that help comes, but that seemed unlikely.

Or they could try something reckless to try to save the city; something that would take sacrifice. He looked them each in the eye in turn.

“I may have a plan,” he answered.

About Kirk Jolly

Kirk Jolly is a horror writer from Ogden, Utah.  During the day, he spends his time crunching numbers for a construction company.  From an early age, he loved reading any and everything he could get his hands on, but the books he loved the most were the dark and scary ones form the likes of King, Koontz, and Straub.  These types of books weren’t a big hit with his religious parents forcing him to sneak to the library alone and hiding the books in his room only reading at night while everyone else slept.
It wasn’t until the seventh grade when the honor students of his school had a chance to hear Ray Bradbury speak that he decided he wanted to be a writer.   He has been struggling towards that goal ever since.  After a few short story publications and becoming an associate member of the Horror Writers Association, he gained enough confidence to self-publish his debut novella 6 Hours, 6 Minutes, 6 Seconds in May 2013.  His first full length novel, The Twins and the Raven, the first book in a planned trilogy, is nearing completion and will be out by September 2013.

My Review

I don't want to say too much about this story because it is a novelette and I don't want to give away too much. The title intrigued me, the premise even more. This is a very exciting novelette or long short story, and in short story fashion it leaves you with an ending that will have you thinking long after: Well? Was he or wasn't he? I hope Mr. Jolly will develop this idea into a novel or zombie series. It really is unique in the overpopulated world of Zombies.

Book Review - Twenty - Five by Rachel Hamm

Description

Abigail Bronsen is sure her life is going nowhere when she turns twenty-five and realizes she hasn't done anything on a list of goals she made for herself as a teenager. Ben Harris is looking to find "the one" after his last girlfriend cheated on him. When they crash into each other, it appears they've both found exactly what they wanted.  A year of firsts follows: first date, first kiss, first “I love you’s.”  The first fight is inevitable, but neither of them saw a breakup coming.  When Abigail is offered a job overseas, they’ll discover that no relationship is perfect and even true love sometimes finds itself separated by time and distance.

Excerpt

Three little words.  How hard is it to say three little words?  Apparently very hard.  Neither of us seemed capable of just laying the truth out there. I thought hearing about the women he’d slept with would change how I felt about him.  Which is probably why I asked in the first place.  But it didn’t.  It told me what I hadn’t fully understood until then.  He was the one.  I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him.  And I was scared to death he didn’t feel the same way. He looked at me like he’d never seen anyone so beautiful.  He acted like he loved me.  But he’d never said it. What if I were Megan?  What if he wanted to love me, but couldn’t?
As October began, Ben decided he wanted to celebrate my last month in the mailroom.  I tried to explain I wasn’t guaranteed a monthly column, but he insisted.  “I have faith in you,” he said.  Not exactly “I love you,” but so close.
I glanced into his kitchen, where he stood busy at the stove, cooking dinner for us.  Us.  A word I thought escaped my vocabulary long ago.  I watched him for several minutes: chopping, stirring, tasting, and an entirely new sensation filled me - comfort.  I felt at home.  This was what I’d been waiting for.  My whole life I wondered what it would feel like to find a person who I could trust, laugh with, cry with.  I felt so blissfully happy in that moment, for once I didn’t wonder what he was thinking.  He hadn’t said those three little words yet, but I could.
I walked into the kitchen and put my arms around his waist, resting my cheek on his shoulder blade.  He automatically put his free hand on the two of mine.
“Careful, the stove is hot.”  His instinct to protect me caused my heart to swell and I could hear its rhythmic thumping in my ears.
“I love you,” I said.  The strength of my voice actually surprised me, I expected the words to come out in a whisper, but they rang out loud and clear.  He dropped the spatula on the stovetop as he whirled around.  Taking my face in his hands, he kissed me, his lips strong and intense.  Our breathing in sync, we stood completely still, and I drank him in, the words threatening to ruin the perfect moment by spilling out again.  I love you, I love you, I love you.
When he pulled his mouth away, his face remained close to mine.  “Sorry,” he began, “the normal response is, I love you, too.”  His cheeks flushed pink with pleasure and my heart nearly exploded from happiness.
“I think I liked your response better.”  I smiled.

Author Bio

Rachel was born in Buffalo, NY, but raised in Burlington, NC.  Thanks to her northern parents and being raised in the south, she likes to say she got the best of both worlds: (soda) pop and terrible sports teams (go Bills!), grits and southern hospitality.  She's been an avid reader since childhood, growing up with Sam-I-Am, Matilda, and Sarah Crewe then falling in love with Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, Henry and Clare DeTamble, and Harry Potter.  For her, little things in life are the ones to be the most passionate about.  Sunkist.  Getting pedicures.  Her dvd collection.  A really great pen.  Twenty-Five is her proudest accomplishment.

Rachel now lives in Raleigh, NC, but someday hopes to make it to London.  She's pretty sure (if reincarnation exists) she was British in another life.

My Review

Aww....to be twenty-five again! This is a no frills, no supernatural complications, no mystery, no murder, straight up ROMANCE!!! I think it's been a while since I've read one of these. It was actually quite refreshing.

Twenty-five is the story of two people falling in love. Abigail is twenty-five, sees herself as plain, works in a mail room to work her way up to columnist in a magazine. She's alone with her books and has decided that's how it's going to be. Ben is an entrepreneur from a wealthy family who's never had to work for anything. This story takes us from the moment they crash into one another (literally) to the end...which is happy, let me tell you.

Of course there are bumps along the way. About two thirds of the way through I HAD to keep reading. I mean I couldn't go to bed that night unless I got to the end. I just needed closure. LOL!

I would consider this story between sweet romance and spicy romance. While we are not given the blow-by-blow in the bedroom, there is some heat to the build up. I wouldn't recommend it for  younger ages without parental guidance because there is some language and of course the bedroom stuff, BUT I think it does approach the subject of abstinence in a real way and moms, you just might want your daughters to read about a heroine who has decided to wait for all the right reasons!

This story is very fun and I really enjoyed it. I found myself smiling many times and my husband asking me what was so funny. I told him it was just really sweet! It is a well written light, easy read.

Book Review: Epiphany by Christina Jean Michaels

Descrption

“I had my first psychic dream when I was nine. Psychic implied power, and powerful wasn’t a word I’d use to describe myself. I couldn’t foretell the future or conjure visions at will, but I couldn’t think of a more fitting word to describe what I sometimes saw in my dreams.”

For 23-year-old Mackenzie Hill, tossing her life down the garbage disposal is easy after a painful incident shatters her life. Her heart is bleeding, and moving to Watcher’s Point is a chance to start anew, only she isn’t prepared for the guy who walks out of her dreams and into the flesh. Literally . . . because she’s been dreaming about this sexy stranger for years.

Mackenzie is even less prepared to face the dark nature of her dreams. They’ve turned disturbingly gruesome, full of blood and murder, and when they begin to coincide with the media’s headlines, she and Aidan realize her visions might be the key to stopping a madman from killing again.

Only Aidan has painful secrets of his own, and perhaps the biggest danger of all is falling for him.

Excerpt

A half hour later, after three rounds of drinks and a dozen lurid jokes, I extracted myself and was certain four pairs of lascivious eyes were glued to my ass.

Six grabbed my arm mid-stride and gestured toward Aidan. “Talk to him. It won’t kill you, I promise.”

I wasn’t so sure about that—I’d been trying to talk to him all week, but he’d been tight-lipped. The band went to break, and I kissed my excuse to duck and hide goodbye. Six gave me a final nudge in his direction.

“How’s it going?” I asked, gripping the counter for support. His eyes answered for him. Troubled and drawn, they indicated a sleepless night. Two full shot glasses sat between his hands; three empties had already been pushed aside.

This couldn’t be a good sign.

I said the first thing that came to mind. “No costume tonight?”

“I’m not really in a festive mood.” His eyes traveled the length of my body, and the corner of his mouth crept up in a lopsided smile. “Nice hat,” he said, swaying in his seat, “but Bonnie was blond.”

“I don’t play well with hair dye or wigs. It’s a character flaw.” What had gotten into me? Talking to the opposite sex had never come so easily, especially with a man as attractive as Aidan.

Sexy. Gorgeous. Hmm . . . wonder what’s underneath those clothes?

I swallowed hard. Now who had lascivious eyes? Time to pour cement into my mind’s gutter.

“You’re right. I can’t picture you blond.” He swayed on the barstool again, and I figured he must have hit the bottle before arriving. “Where’s Clyde hiding?”

“Bonnie’s an independent woman. She’s going solo.”

“Maybe you’ll get into less trouble that way.” He downed the remaining two shots without warning. The last hit the counter with a racket. “Can you believe today is my birthday?” The scorn in his tone confused me. Most people didn’t get so bent over a birthday.

I wasn’t sure how to reply. Somehow I guessed “happy birthday” wasn’t what he wanted to hear. I silently waited, hoping he’d shed some light. Even in my dreams—where I learned of things I had no way of explaining to others—he remained a mystery.

“I’ll take another round,” he said, gesturing toward the empties. “Make them doubles.”

I swallowed hard. “You sure? You’ve had a lot already.”

He flashed that crooked smile again, and I wondered if he realized how disarming it was. “You’re worried about me?” he asked.

I hesitated. “Yeah, I am.” Way more than I wanted to admit. Tonight was Halloween, after all.

Author Bio

Christina Jean Michaels was born in Paradise, California, but she has found the true home of her heart in Eugene, Oregon where she finds plenty of inspiration for storytelling.

When she was young, her mother said she hated words. Now she can't imagine not writing. She became an avid reader when she was thirteen and discovered the world ofSweet Valley High. About a year later she realized she could play God and write about her own characters. She has been writing in some form ever since.

She lives with her husband and their four children—three rambunctious UFC/wrestling-loving boys and one girl who steals everyone’s attention.

My Review

Let me preface my review with...I do not like murder mysteries. I hate serial killer themed anything. So when I opened Epiphany to start reading, I wasn't hopeful I'd enjoy it. SURPRISE! I really, really did!!!

Ms. Michaels is a very talented writer and draws her characters and environment beautifully. Every action and reaction of Aidan and  Mackenzie were real and believable. I love it when the people in a book seem real. I could also picture the not-so-sleepy little town of Watcher's point. Her descriptions of the Northwest are beautifully done and make me long to visit sometime.

While there is much sleuthing going on in the story, I would most definitely peg this novel as a romance. There is a slight paranormal slant to the romance with Makenzie's psychic dreams, but it doesn't take center stage. The story revolves around a devastated Aidan and a broken Mackenzie. Through much of the book we are learning bits and pieces of their past. The timing is good on the reveals and Ms. Michaels gives us just enough to bait us along.

I enjoyed the romance and the heat between the the characters. When they finally give in, you're in for a spicy treat!  One thing I didn't enjoy about the book was the serial killer aspect. I KNOW it's a huge point, but it's just not my thing. I get kind of squicky with that stuff. BUT, I know if you enjoy a good criminal mystery, you will most definitely enjoy this. You get the crime scenes and the clues without too much gore. Even if, like me, you're not into criminal mystery, I think you would still enjoy the book for it's intensity and romance.

Overall great book that I would suggest for mature audiences.
