KL Reviews - Summoned by Rainy Kaye

About the Book

Paranormal Romance
Date Published: 3/28/2014

Twenty-three year old Dimitri has to do what he is told—literally. Controlled by a paranormal bond, he is forced to use his wits to fulfill unlimited deadly wishes made by multimillionaire Karl Walker.

Dimitri has no idea how his family line became trapped in the genie bond. He just knows resisting has never ended well. When he meets Syd—assertive, sexy, intelligent Syd—he becomes determined to make her his own. Except Karl has ensured Dimitri can't tell anyone about the bond, and Syd isn't the type to tolerate secrets.

Then Karl starts sending him away on back-to-back wishes. Unable to balance love and lies, Dimitri sets out to uncover Karl's ultimate plan and put it to an end. But doing so forces him to confront the one wish he never saw coming—the wish that will destroy him.

Summoned is represented by Rossano Trentin of TZLA.

EXCERPT

I dislike having to murder someone. Kidnapping is worse. At least when I setup a kill, I know what's coming. No connections, no honesty, no surprises. Everything I say and do are just steps to luring in my victim. Once the victim falls right into the trap, the next move is swift: crushed windpipe, fatal concussion, or a good ol' fashioned headshot.

Kidnapping, on the other hand, is a little trickier. First, the victim has an opportunity to respond. I don't like this. Sometimes they cry. Sometimes they manage to alert the authorities. And sometimes they escape, usually by inflicting bodily harm on me.

Dead people don't retaliate. Kidnapped ones, well, they're a little more . . . lively.

The second major difference between killing and kidnapping is my conscience. I get in and out with a kill. We have no chance to bond.

Abductees require a little more one-on-one. As much as I try to keep the switch turned off, I can't help but listen to their pleas and demands. And I usually realize I'm a jerk.

That's exactly where I find myself one late afternoon in June. I prefer doing this at night, but moreover, I would prefer not doing this at all.

Instead, I have a belligerent nine year old girl sitting in the passenger seat of my Honda Accord, shackles on her wrists and ankles and a small stuffed bunny on her lap. She's eying me in a way that makes me self-conscious. Like I'm the bad guy.

Probably because I am the bad guy.

KL's Review

Review for Summoned

Despite the blatant referral to Disney’s Aladin, this is definitely not your blue funny friend.  Nor is he the three wish giving genie with magical powers and living in a bottle.   Dimitri is just the next in line to inherit the bond to the master of the family that holds him.  He spends his life doing the will of his master who has but to summon him at will and end all requests with “This I wish”.  It might not be such a terrible life except that every wish Dimitri’s master has is to kill or steal in order for him to continue accumulating his enormous wealth.  Though Dimitri is not happy with his life, he has never been ready to walk away until Syd enters his life.  This one night stand becomes the love of his life and his reason for daring to defy the wish of his master.

I can say that I have never read a paranormal romance about Jinn, and that is what intrigued me to read this book.  It did not disappoint!  I thoroughly enjoyed delving into this mystical realm that takes you way beyond where Robin Williams took genies.  I loved the concept, and there was definitely a twist at the end that I didn’t see coming.  I knew there was going to be one and all was going to be “happily ever after”, but I could never figure out how it was going to happen until right when it did.  Sorry for being cryptic, but I hate giving spoilers.  If you want to know, read it for yourself.

I did have a hard time connecting with the characters as I felt they sometimes did or said things they didn’t seem to fit the profile I had envisioned of them.  Some of Dimitri’s wish fulfillments seemed very farfetched, especially considering that he really did not have any special powers.  There were also a few typos, but not anything to make you want to not finish it.

Overall, definitely a fun adult read!  Again, this is not Disney, and there are explicit scenes.  If you are looking for a new and original paranormal romance, then this should be your next read.

About the Book

Romance w/ Light Paranormal Elements
Date Published: 9/23/2012

The mysterious recluse…

Owen Campbell holds himself apart from other people. Badly scarred from emotional wounds that have never healed, he doesn’t expect to find true love or happiness. He remains isolated in a prison of his own making, determined to not let anyone close enough to hurt him again. But his willpower is shaken to the core when Sarah Browning enters his world.

The girl next door…

Sarah Jane Browning is three years into her college degree when a call from home changes everything. Back at the family homestead in the heart of Appalachia, she’s forced to reevaluate her hopes and dreams for the future.

Distraction from her heartache comes in the form of her parents’ neighbor. Whispers about “odd Owen Campbell” abound in their small community, and Sarah’s curiosity is aroused. When she breaks the rules and trespasses onto his land, what she finds is beyond her wildest imaginings.

As Sarah struggles to overcome tragedy and loss, her burgeoning relationship with Owen is sorely tested. Will love conquer all, or will the secrets from Owen’s past tear them apart forever?

EXCERPT

Checking back over her shoulder after a few steps, Sarah frowned when the deer continued to mimic her path. Dismissing the incident as the curiosity of a wild young deer that hadn't yet learned humans were the enemy, she let her mind drift. Before long, she heard the sound of water trickling rapidly over rocks, and as she rounded a curve, she saw a small stream curving through the mountainside. The branch of water cut into a shallow hollow, one side protected by a higher ledge of earth that was full of mountain laurel.

Sarah stopped to take in the sight and drew in a cleansing breath. As she looked around, she realized the deer had followed her and stopped a short distance away. The bench of land it stood on converged with the deer path alongside the stream.

If Sarah hadn't known better, she would have sworn the deer wore a look of consternation. The animal bent its head to nibble at some greenery on the ground, but kept its eyes on her. It almost seemed to glance between her and the water, as though weighing the danger of coming closer for a drink.

“Maybe if I turn away, you’ll feel bolder.” The deer path crossed the branch at a narrow point, and she decided to go a bit further. The water cascaded down a small waterfall above the narrow point, pooling in a shallow area that would be the perfect spot for a thirsty deer to get a cooling drink. Hopping across the water, Sarah followed the trail. To her surprise, the path didn’t continue to the flat bench on the other side of the small ridge, but climbed up and around the rocky outcropping. Curious, she climbed the incline. The sight took her breath away, and for a moment, she didn't believe what was in front of her was real.

The rocky outcropping the water cascaded down was a sort of natural dam. On its other side, a large pool of water had collected. Fifteen feet across and nearly that wide again going in the opposite direction, the pool was surrounded by sloping granite on all sides except the front, where the water dropped over the edge. The water was blue-green, going from light aqua to deeper cobalt, and the banks of rock and earth protected it on all sides.

On the opposite side, a craggy granite cliff rose about ten feet out of the water, overhanging slightly to form a shallow cave. The mountain seemed to curve around the pool and, mesmerized, Sarah continued around, crossing the branch once more at a point above the pool. From there, she was able to climb on top of the granite boulder that created the cliff. Easing to the edge, she carefully sat down, her legs dangling over the side.

When the curious deer appeared at the edge of the pool below, Sarah laughed. The deer gave a small jerk at the sound, eyeing her warily.

“I’m sorry.” She felt utterly insane, carrying on a conversation with a deer, but it had followed her like a curious puppy. Sarah realized that keeping quiet would feel even more absurd. “It’s so beautiful here. I had no idea any place like this existed.” She looked around, noticing that the trees didn't arch out over the pool the way she thought they would have.

“I’ll bet it’s really hot here in the summer, and that water feels so good and cool. Or does the pool dry up, I wonder?”

For a while, she just sat, braced back on her hands, her face lifted to the sky. The peace imbued in the place washed over her. When she felt ready, she let herself remember Kathy’s words to Paul, and their laughter. The memory made Sarah sad and still made her cringe with embarrassment, but she realized that she didn’t feel quite as angry about it as she had.

“Thank you, God, for letting me hear that today. At least I don’t have to face Paul until Monday,” she said to the sky. “And… and maybe, if that’s what he likes, then maybe he’s not as special as I thought he was. Let him have his buxom girls. At least I don’t look like a milk cow, unlike someone I could name.”

A snort came from below, and Sarah jumped. She’d forgotten the deer. Looking down, she saw that it had moved to the edge of the exposed granite and settled down on a soft patch of leaves.

“What are you snorting at?”

When the deer shook its head, Sarah laughed. Even though she knew it was probably batting away flies with its ears, the deer acted almost human.

She glanced down at her watch and was shocked when she saw the time. She was going to have to run in order to make it home in time for supper. With a muted curse that she’d heard her father say when he hit his thumb with the hammer, she scrambled to her feet and looked around. Another bench ran down from the side of the boulder opposite where she’d come up and fell naturally into the one the deer had been on when she’d first seen it.

“That saves me a little time.” With one last look at the deer, which had gotten to its feet when Sarah did, she headed down the bench. “I’ll come back someday,” she promised over her shoulder. “Try to not get shot or anything.”

For a day that had gone so badly, she thought as she ran, things had turned out to be okay.

* * *

For a long time after the girl had gone, Owen stood on the edge of the pool, looking after her. With his enhanced hearing, he could follow her progress down the trail and back onto Browning land.

He didn’t know what to think. He’d never encountered another human in all the time he’d been exploring the woods. His parents had seen to that over the years; no one dared come onto Campbell property without his father’s permission. Now that the property belonged to Owen, he guessed he was the one who’d have to do something about trespassers.

He bent his neck, taking another sip from the water. As the girl had guessed, it was cool and delightful.

Owen sighed, a sound that came out in deer form much as it did when he was human. The pool was one of his favorite places to roam, one of his safe places. If the girl came back as she promised, he didn't know what it would mean for him. He couldn't risk being caught, and he wasn't willing to give up his solitude. If the girl threatened that… he hated the thought of having to go to her parents, but if it came to that, he’d do it.

Promo - Sexual Appetites of Vampires by Donna Fletcher

About the Book

Paranormal Romance
Date Published: February 25, 2014

Lara Bennett intends to only take a few minutes of Michael Valaine's time. But then she only has a few minutes since a snowstorm is about to hit the area. She’ll interview him, ask him a few questions about his family’s strange heritage and be on her way before the first snowflake falls.

Things don’t go as planned for Lara. First, Michael Valaine is a drop-dead gorgeous man and second, and most importantly, he claims to be a vampire. She assumes he’s either annoyed with her for her impromptu interview or he’s crazy, either way she wants out of his home and away from him.

A blinding snowstorm stops her from leaving and she’s faced with the prospect of riding it out with either a crazy man or a vampire. That is until Michael’s eyes begin to glow red, his lips draw back in a snarl, and his fangs descend.

Lara’s about to find out, firsthand, the information she came looking for...exactly what is the sexual appetites of vampires?

EXCERPT

Lara had met plenty of people who believed themselves a creature of the night. Some were just plain nuts while others played at it. She wasn't sure if Michael Valaine fell into either category. And that was even more frightening.

“The need for sex can border on complete madness when a vampire is in need of it.”

Madness. Now there was something she could agree with. Michael Valaine was stark raving mad.

“But that type of aching hunger, a need to devour, is what vampires try to keep at bay for it comes with consequences. So we keep ourselves well satisfied with sex with willing human women of which there is an abundant supply.”

Lara finally had it. “You've got to be kidding me. You really expect me to believe this bullshit. I get it. You’re annoyed with me for showing up unexpected, and so you decide to play a little game with me. See if I frighten easily. Well, you chose the wrong woman, buddy. But I do have to thank you for giving me some great material for the book. Now I’m leaving and will never darken your already dark doorstep again.”

“What were you expecting to find when you came here?” he asked accusingly.

His dark eyes grew so intense that Lara thought they glowed black. “Certainly not a grown man who claims he’s a vampire.”

“So you’re upset because you meet a vampire who can answer your questions about sex?”

Lara rolled her eyes. “Really? You’re going to continue to claim that you’re a vampire. A blood-sucking, unearthly creature that is ravenous when it comes to sex.”

“I thought you came for the truth.”

“The truth would be nice, but it seems that you are intent on continuing your little game. I, however, do not wish to play.”

That sly smile of his surfaced again. “I guarantee that you would enjoy playing with me, Lara.”

            “That’s it, I’m leaving.”

Michael stood. “I’ll see you to the door.”

“Not necessary, I know the way out,” she said, buttoning up her jacket.

“Just because I am a vampire doesn't mean I’m not a gentleman,” he said and stepped aside for her to pass.

“A gentlemen vampire, now there’s an oxymoron if ever I heard one,” Lara said as she scooted past him, eager to get out of the house and as far away from Michael Alexandru Valaine that she could get.

A phone’s jarring ring startled Lara as she entered the foyer and made her way to the front door.

Michael picked up the phone on the side table behind the vase of a beautiful winter flora arrangement. “Michael Valaine. I see. No, not to worry I will see to the matter. Thank you for calling and see that you take care in this storm. I hear that it is to last at least two days. Good. I’m glad to hear that. My regards to your family.”

He sounded so civilized and so normal that Lara grew more annoyed. Why had he treated her in such a ridiculous fashion? Why hadn't he simply told her that he wasn't interested in speaking with her and send her on her way?

He approached her slowly, almost predatorily. And she was damn glad she was leaving.

He stopped next to the door, taking hold of the handle. “That was Martha. She has calls for her bed & breakfast forwarded to her sister’s place when she’s not there. Your car service called and cancelled. The snow has already started and with predictions worse than they first thought, they won’t endanger their driver or you. It looks like you’ll be my guest for the duration.”

“Hell no! I’ll find someplace to stay, but it won’t be with you,” she said and shoved his hand off the door to swing it open. Her heart dropped along with her mouth at the sight of the blizzard-like conditions. She could barely make out what was in front of her, since the snow was falling so heavily.

Michael pulled the door closed and turned the lock. The click sounded so final, as if a jailer was locking her in and there would be no escape. She was trapped with a sexy hunk of a man who thought himself a vampire. It sounded more like the setting of a romance novel than real life. But she was no swooning heroine.

She looked Michael Valaine straight in those dark eyes of his and felt like a fool saying, “Tell me you've been playing me and that you’re no vampire.”

“Oh, sweetheart, if only I could.”

His eyes began to glow red, his lips curled back, fangs dropped down, and Lara fainted.

Only time will tell. Unfortunately, it might mean having to give up everything for the chance of ending this once and for all.

EXCERPT

“I know we failed getting out of here. I don’t know what happened, but it was our best shot and we failed.”

“I know. I know this will kill Rose, but I think we need to stop fighting this place, at least for a while. We can’t risk them breaking us up. I thought for sure we would be split up after this.”

His statement breaks my heart because that’s exactly what is happening to us. “That’s not what I meant. I just think we need to have that talk, the one where we talk about if one of us makes it out of here and the other one doesn't.”

“Don’t say that. We leave here together, got it?” Charlie pulls on my arm to stop me walking and grips my face so that I see the certainty in his eyes. It takes every bit of mental power to not cry or break down and tell him that it isn't going to happen that way.

“I know, but being in that room for so long, I realized that, if you got out and were free, I’d want you to do something for me.”

“Do what?” he asks me cautiously, biting his tongue on arguing his point that we will get out together again.

“I’d want you to check on my mom and Drew. Make sure they’re coping okay. Tell them how sorry I am over Dana and how much I love them.”

“Did you have a dream I should know about?” He narrows his eyes at me, sensing I’m hiding something. I blink away more tears, knowing the only way I can get out of this is to lie. I have to lie to him. I’m a horrible person.

“I haven’t dreamt since the hospital. I just had a lot of time to think. I thought that if I was to die in that room, what would happen to my mom and to Drew? I know I can trust you to look in on them. I just needed to say those words, to know that if something happened to me, that they’ll be okay.”

“Nothing is happening to you, I promise.” He brings me forward, hugging me to his chest.

My heart must be completely shattered now. There can’t be anything left, and yet, I can still feel it breaking. I can’t have him making a promise there is no way he can keep. I can’t do that to him.

“Don’t promise me that. Sometimes, things are just out of your power. Fate put us together and it could just as easily pull us apart if it wants to.”

“I’m not going to—”

“Just promise to love me forever. That’s what I need to hear from you.”

Without any reluctance, he answers me, “I promise to love you forever.”

“And I promise that I will love you forever, too.” I finally make a promise I know I’ll keep.

Em's Review

Bitter Sweet...I've gotten to know Zoe, Charlie, Rose, Will and all the others over the past few months reading the Taken series. I was so excited to finally get to read it and find out what happens, but it was so sad to see it end as well. If you're a reader, you know what I'm talking about!  Taken by Choice starts up in the middle of action and keeps you on the edge for the rest of the book. Turmoil, longing, fighting, anger, love, friendship, sacrifice...all things Ms. Frances does well to keep you right in the story. I was so frustrated right along with Zoe sometimes I want to put the book down because I could just feel it oozing off the page.

This book answers all the lingering questions left from page one of the first book. It's all wrapped up in a nice little package by the end. Though I still think there may be subtle openings for a spin off possibly...or maybe that's just wishful thinking.

One thing I've been waiting for since the beginning is to see Zoe take care of herself and grow a little. Ms. Frances doesn't disappoint and I'm please with the character's development.

Charlie and Zoe light up the page with their passion and oo-la-la, so definitely NA to Adult type stuff without being raunchy though. There is lots of violence, blood, and death but not so much as say a horror novel. Sensitive readers just need to be aware.

There were a few things that fell a little short for me. The final stand off was not what I expected. I won't give any spoilers but it just did not build the way it could have. Still trying not to give spoilers, what happens right after the climax and Zoe's reuniting with Charlie seemed forced and unrealistic for the way the relationship had built up.

And once again I had to laugh at American characters using words like 'lift' for elevator. It's endearing.

Overall, definitely worth the read and couldn't put it down once I started. Jessica Frances has created an amazing trilogy for her debut novels and I can't wait to see what she has planned next!

EM's Review and Interview: Succbus Tear by Andreas Wiesemann

About the Book

“I, no—I mean, I was speaking to someone else,” Cain blurted.

The winged woman lowered her face as it filled with desperate longing and horrible resignation. “I understand.” She raised her eyes to Cain. He could see her tears pour upon her face. “I am so sorry that you had to endure this intrusion of my hell into your perception. Forgive me, I will not hold you here.” She turned around and started to walk away.

A harsh internal turmoil erupted in Cain. He felt her despair and desperation flow over his reluctance and selfishness like a wave crumbles a wall of sand.

It’s just a dream, right? I can live with condemning a figment of my imagination, right?

******************

The place where the world, and all its knowledge ends, is the place where the wonderment of Faith begins.
And where they meet, is often the place where the greatest stories of love, redemption, and life are formed and shaped.
In this story we follow Cain Lamentson, an Atheist paired, and Bound to a Succubus he named Al'bah.

Together, they will be the herald of a destiny transcending everything either of them knew. A story that goes beyond. From the depths and darkness of hate, and pride. To the heights of Faith and true love..

Interview with Andreas Wiesemann

EM: Andreas, tell us a little about yourself

A: (chuckles)

Ah man.... how does one tell others who they are, and why they are important?
That kinda reminds me about character writing.

I suppose there are three elements to me that would matter.
I am a dreamer
I am a Pisces
And, I am a Christian.

As a dreamer, I look upon the world through the eyes of wonderment, and imagination. I see more what I want to see, than what is really there. This leaves many to declare me 'being crazy'... but in a good way.
My heart is on my sleeve, unashamed, and unafraid. I present the best parts of me alongside with the worst, and let one decide if knowing my story (me/my life) is worth the read.

Being a dreamer, and a Pisces is usually one and the same. But, in my case I am classified as the atypical Pisces. I am the strong fish that swims against the flow. I test the barriers, and cast my thoughts into the vast stretches of imagination... all to see where the boundaries of ability and thought are, and crash against them to see what is on the other side.
Foolish as it would seem to struggle against impenetrable barriers, but, in the end, I have never moved against the grain of the way my soul sings its chorus to the world, and existence.

Being a Christian means, for the mainstream, that I am a fool.
For my faith, I have been hurled most every insult conceivable. It brings a heavy sigh to both heart, and lungs. For I have seen the stars.
I am not talking about the stars one might see from the backyard on a clear night.
I mean the stars one sees in the middle of the ocean, with no city lights for hundreds of miles.
For that moment, it was easy to understand why humanity could so easily believe in something other than themselves, having sovereignty over them.... long, long ago.
These days, seems like the glory of man tries so hard to overwhelm the glory of the Heavens. And it is not to man's credit, in my opinion.

EM: Well said! Since you brought it up already, my first question pertains to pairing Christian beliefs and Succubus. One might automatically think your book nothing other than erotica the way the Succubi  are normally treated in literature. Is your portrayal of Al'bah, the Succubus, in your book derived from your own imagination or are there more widely held beliefs about the Succubi being angels of some sort that you pulled from?

A: Ah,
What a quagmire that is, isn't it?
In truth, I have never come across any positive literature that is from the era of the first appearance of the Succubi mythos.

So, the personality of Al'bah, the succubus in my story is essentially something I pieced together.
But, I pieced it together in what I like to think is a unique way.

I actually had a rather heated debate with a more traditionalist Christian who condemned my inclusion of a Succubus in a 'Christian' novel.
I write my paraphrased response here.

"If one considers that everything was made by God, one must also concede that God made things with a divine purpose.

When we take Lucifer, as a fallen angel... we must also take into account that there was an original purpose that he "fell" from.

In my opinion Succubi, are no different. Though the Bible does not mention Succubi, they are widely regarded as embodiment of lust, and promiscuity.
I like to think that Succubi, in their original divine purpose were the embodiment of love, and faithfulness."

And, truth be told, I am not the only one who views Succubi, in this light. Tera, "The queen of Succubi" (www.succubus.net) found my novel to be quite special, and enjoyed it a great deal.
Excellent question!

EM: I think you have drawn a very original view of the Succubi myth, one that fantasy readers, both Christian and non, will enjoy. Succubus Tear is your first novel. What spurred you into writing it?

A: (deep sigh)

What spurred me to write this novel?
A lot of things,
At the time I wrote Succubus Tear, I was attending school 40hrs a week, and working 36hrs a week.
Considering drive time (2hrs+) and homework, I never got more than 5 hours of sleep a night for a year!

I often sigh and shake my head when my friends and co-workers tell me they don't have the time to read my novel.
I often respond 'I was busier, and I had time to WRITE it!'

(ahem)

What was it.....
It was a need, a demand my soul had upon my fingers.
It was a love that I wanted to have, and wanted others to have as well.
It was a story for its own sake. A story meant to reveal God to others.
My desperate attempt to treat the stress I was under.
The letters, and words were tears that I could not shed, and sighs that were in vain.

The weight of overwhelming burdens one life can hold, to at last break down a barrier that bled a maelstrom of emotion and words.
Carrying with it, elements from every love story I ever knew, and dreamed of.

Perhaps, in the end... it is the one part of me that I could share with the world. The one part of me that will continue long after I am gone.

EM: It sounds like Succubus Tear is truly part of you, a legacy. Do you think you have it in you to write another "love"?

A: Of course I could.

But I would need just as great a inspiration of love.

Either the lack of, or the fulfillment of.

EM: So now for the really important questions...

Hard copy or ebook?

A: Hard copy.
Without question.

I know it seems like kinda a hypocritical thing, considering Succubus Tear is an ebook. (for now)
But, I will say I carry a hand made copy with me everywhere I go.

And to anticipate the next question...
The reason why I prefer hard copy might be...rather odd.

I remember browsing libraries of most cities I ever lived in.
And college.

I have seen books that were not touched for longer than I have been alive. It always amazes me to touch the page. To see the author's name.
To read the name of the person on the "library card" who checked out "Moon's Glory" in 1964...eighteen years before I was born.
In those days, to have a published "book" was a greater accomplishment than today.

These days, data and text is so fleeting.
I like to think all authors *want* their books in print. To touch and feel the result of their work.
Even so, I have a unique insight to this concept as I *hand-bound* several copies of my first novel.
It was a learning process, but a joyful one at that.
And more than that... I think the author blesses the reader who understand this truth as well.

Imagine the scribe who penned a book by hand.
Or when typewriters were in existence.
The materials needed to craft and form such a work of art.... all to tell a story, or to inform.
To convey something to someone else.

That an object appearing to be so simple....is actually so much more.
That is the very nature of telling a story. And that is why I will always love holding a book in my hands, than any electronic medium.

EM: Cats or dogs?

A: I've had the pleasure to own both.
But, I found out I don't want to own another pet, any pet. Never gave much thought as to why.
Although, if I had no choice, I'd say dog. Dogs can and will do things cats can't or wont.

EM: Sketchers or Converse?

A: Hmmm,
I have Avia shoes (Wal-mart)
Never owned either brand.
But, I like the look of sketchers better.

EM: Broccoli or beans?

A: Aren't both famous for giving you gas?
lol
beans, you can do so much more with em, and there are so many varieties and types.
Favorite = *fresh* green bean

EM: Yes. Yes they are.
Thanks Andrea for taking the time to readers know a little more about you. Good luck with Succubus Tear!

My Review

It's hard to know where to start with Succubus Tear. It is truly unlike anything I've ever read. When I started the book, I thought it would probably be the same old spin on a Paranormal Romance. But I was so wrong in such a good way. Succubus Tear is about the struggle of a man to understand love and and "all loving" creature to come to terms with the love she feels she can not attain.

Together, Cain and Al'bah embark on an action filled journey. Through the adventure, readers are given a glimpse of their souls. Not only are these two characters drawn exquisitely, but all the supporting characters are vibrant and believable as well. It is fast paced and thought provoking.

I always like to give pros and cons of a book, because there are always cons, but I can't seem to find any for Succubus Tear. I wasn't fond of some of the less developed sketches I guess, but that really doesn't reflect on the story!

This book is for older YA and up as there is some language, sexual themes, and some pretty heavy duty soul searching that younger kids either need guidance or would just find boring. But any fantasy, paranormal junkie will enjoy Succubus Tear. While there are theological themes in this book, I think both religious and non can enjoy the story for the story itself. It poses some questions that will have both sides of the abyss thinking.

Succubus Tear is a well written, unique story that will stay with you for quite a while.

Excerpt

 “I smell trouble.“

Evan Blackwood had been staring blankly at a news report about a hunt for a man who had robbed a local bank earlier in the week. Now, he stared blankly at his best friend and cousin, Scott Lee. Evan had hoped Scott would help take his mind off the woman he loved – the woman who had flatly rejected him. Instead, Scott was making things worse with dire predictions… predictions Evan had no choice but to take seriously. Scott was, after all, a powerful intuitive, whose gift had only seemed to improve after his unfortunate run-in with a werewolf ten years earlier.

“What do you expect me to do?“ Evan asked. “Hit her over the head with a club and drag her by the hair back to my cave?“

Scott snorted. “You never had to do any of that. You had her right here, in your cave, and you let her walk out. You could order her back, but you won’t.“

Evan didn't dignify the comment with a response. Scott’s instincts had always served him better when it came to physical threats rather than emotional ones, and Scott didn't want to hear that Cassie would hate Evan for forcing her to stay with him. In Scott’s world, after she was safe, gratitude would soften her heart. Or if not that, then at least time. If Evan had ever thought anything of the sort, her reaction to his saving her life, and the life debt she now owed him, set him straight.

He had to admit, his initial marriage proposal hadn't been at all well done. Nerves he barely acknowledged had fumbled the question into a near-command, Marry me, and she had freaked out. Still, he had hoped she would want to marry him. Now, he wasn't even sure how he could try to convince her without inadvertently coercing her. The life debt made it difficult for her to refuse anything she knew he wanted, and impossible for her to refuse anything he directly commanded.

Scott wasn't the first one to suggest he just claim her, either. Evan’s father, Victor Blackwood, had said much the same thing, adding: I want to see you steal that girl right out from under her father’s nose. At least Scott’s motives were better.

“I spotted one of the Travises in town today,“ Scott said.

Evan nearly growled. “One of these days, we really need to run that family out of town.“

“Hey, you know I’d help you with that if it came to it, but it isn't going to happen anytime soon.“

“They wouldn't go after Cassie.“

“I wouldn't put anything past them.“

He had a point, Evan grudgingly admitted. The Travises had always lived just outside of civilized behavior, and they seemed to make their own rules.

“And I told you about the Blairs asking questions,“ Scott added.

“You also said they were probably just trying to stir up trouble.“ The Blairs were mind mages, adept at manipulating people’s behaviors with a few well-chosen, well-timed words.

“They may be succeeding.“

“Or they may be hoping to goad me into acting too soon, pushing her away.“
Scott didn't have an answer to that. Perhaps it was just as well that he didn't understand matters of the heart, since he was too dangerous by half, the beast within him prone to violence. Scott was, perhaps, the only man in town Evan didn't know if he could beat in a fight. He only hoped he never had to find out for sure.

“Come on.“ Evan shut off the TV with a flicker of will, not even bothering with the remote, resting within easy arm’s reach on the end table next to him. “I can’t stay here anymore tonight. We’ll find her, make sure she’s safe, and if not, send a message to anyone stupid enough to try anything.“

Elemental Inferno by A.J. Locke

About the Book

Release date: November 2013
Genre: Adult-Paranormal Romance
Purchase: Amazon

Rielle is a Winter Aura who for the past hundred years has held the job of controlling winter weather in her assigned area. During the non-winter months she can live as she pleases, as long as she doesn't do anything that would make her lose control of herself, which could unleash her power and have it snowing in July. Therefore, sex outside of winter is a big no-no, because what could make her lose control of herself more? If Rielle is unable to keep her winter magic dormant during her off seasons, she will be forced to Sleep by the Aura Elders. For Auras, it’s a fate worse than death.

When the Summer Aura for her area winds up mysteriously dead, summer weather spirals out of control until another Summer Aura arrives in the nick of time and brings things back to order. Aden is as gorgeous and alluring as they come, and before Rielle knows it, she finds herself with a roommate at the urging of the Elders, who seem uneasy about Aden, and want an eye kept on him. Rielle and Aden have a magnetic attraction to each other, and for the first time Rielle is afraid of losing control. However, Aden is much more than he seems, and when he shows Rielle a way to indulge their passions without repercussions, it seems too good to be true. But Aden’s secrets are ones the Elders fear, and can’t ignore. As they close in on him with deadly force in mind, Rielle will have to decide if Aden is in fact too dangerous, or if it’s worth going up against the Elders to save the man she’s losing her body, and heart to.

Chapter One

I think most people would only accept a job where their sex life was dictated by what season it was if their life depended on it. Then again, they might choose to die and have as much sex as they could before then. When I had accepted the job almost a hundred years ago, the fine print hadn’t seemed like a big deal. Yeah, I’m old. Immortal if you wanted to get technical, but I only looked about twenty-five. And though my life had depended on taking the job back then, that didn’t make the rules any easier to accept.
Especially since today was the hottest fucking day. It was the kind of day where people threw around adjectives like wet, hot, and sticky, while skirt hems were tugged up and shirts were peeled off. I guess the idea was the more naked you got the less the heat would affect you. I’d finally given up trying to read in a corner of the Brooklyn Public Library, because the conversation a group of people were having at the table next to me was making my ears burn. And it wasn’t because I was a prude. It was because I wanted sex.
Usually I wasn’t so hard up, but the intense heat that had suddenly come across the city had brought this carnal rage to the surface, which was why I was standing in front of a calendar in my apartment calculating how long it would be until I could wrap myself around someone’s body. It was late June, winter was about five months away, and I last had sex three months ago. I braced one hand against the wall, dropped my head, and released a slow exhale, trying to quell the thrumming in my body that had been present since I had woken up to this heat wave three days ago. It was only the beginning of summer, damn it. Yesterday’s high had been a hundred and six, and today it was even hotter.
I bet Bero had done this on purpose. That annoying asshole of a Summer Aura probably thought an early summer heat wave was just we needed. Wouldn’t be the first time he did something like this, but the Elders should have made him stop it. Over the past three days, dozens of people died or were incapacitated by the heat, especially children and the elderly. There were heat strokes galore, and crowded public pools. Hell, I had only high-tailed it to the library for their air conditioning. Mine was barely cooling my apartment down. I would have loved to use my winter magic to cool myself, but being out of my season meant I had to keep myself ridiculously in check, since a slip up could have it snowing in June, and the humans would think that signified the apocalypse. Here was where the ‘no sex until winter’ thing came in, because what could make a person lose control of themselves more than being in the throes of passion?
